Toggle Remote Desktop

Summary

Windows XP introduces the ability for a user to natively connect to a system's desktop remotely and control the system as if she/he was sitting in front of the physical workstation. This functionality can be disabled via the System Control Panel applet or by changing a setting in the registry.

Step-by-step instructions

To change the setting using the System Control Panel applet, do the following:

  1. Hold in the Windows key (it has the Windows symbol on it) and press the PAUSE/BREAK key.
    NOTE: This applet can also be access from the Control Panel when set to Classic View.
  2. Click the Remote tab.
  3. Set or clear the check box next to "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer".
  4. Click OK to close the System Properties page.

To change the setting using the registry, do the following:

  1. Open Registry Editor (Start>Run>regedit).
  2. Navigate to the following key:
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server.
    NOTE: HKLM is the abbreviation for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
  3. Look for a value called fDenyTSConnections.
    NOTE: If this value does not exist, do the following:
    1. Click on Edit.
    2. Click on New.
    3. Select DWORD value.
    4. Type fDenyTSConnections and press ENTER.
      NOTE: Capitalization does count!

  4. Double click on the fDenyTSConnections value.
  5. Type 0 to disable Remote Desktop (1 to enable) and press ENTER.
  6. Close Registry Editor.
