Automatic power off on shutdown in virtual environment

Windows NT 4 server and workstation installations may not "power off" after a shutdown command while running in a virtual environment (i.e. VMware). Two things must be changed for the virtual machine to power off:
  1. %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\hal.dll must be replaced by a version included with Windows NT Service Pack 4.
  2. The registry DWORD value HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\PowerdownAfterShutdown needs to be changed to 1.
