Clicking on Internet links in email does not open a webpage

(Article ID: 001591)
Summary

A user reports that when using Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 (in a Windows XP environment) to read an email with an Internet link and the link is clicked an Internet Explorer 8 window is opened, but the page never displays. When the same link is copied to the clipboard, an Internet Explorer instance is opened and the link is manually pasted into the address bar the page loads correctly.

There are two possible causes to this problem:

  1. Internet Explorer is not set as the default browser.
  2. Some DLLs may need to be re-registered.

Step-by-step instructions

To set Internet Explorer as the default browser do the following:

  1. Open the Internet Options control panel (Start>Control Panel>Internet Options).
  2. Click the Programs tab.
  3. Click the Make default button in the Default web browser section of the screen.
  4. Click Apply to commit the changes.
  5. Click OK to close the Internet Properties window.

NOTE: All open instances of Internet Explorer may need to be closed for the changes to take effect. It may also be necessary to restart Microsoft Outlook for the changes to take effect.

If the problem persists re-register DLLs by doing the following:
  1. Open a Command Prompt window (Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt).
  2. Type in the following commands and click OK for each notice issued:
    • regsvr32 urlmon.dll
    • regsvr32 mshtml.dll
    • regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
    • regsvr32 browseui.dll
    • regsvr32 msjava.dll
