Toggle Reading Layout in Microsoft Office 2003

(Article ID: 001583)
Summary

By default in Microsoft Office 2003, Word attachments in email are opened in Microsoft Word using the Reading Layout. This can cause the layout of the content to be distorted. To change this behavior, go to the general options for Word and disable the "Allow starting in Reading Layout" option.

Step-by-step instructions

To toggle the Reading Layout setting on Microsoft Office 2003, do the following from within Microsoft Word:

  1. Click on the Tools menu and select Options.
  2. Click the General tab.
  3. Locate the checkbox option "Allow starting in Reading Layout".
    • Put a check in the checkbox to turn on the feature.
    • Clear the checkbox to turn off the feature and view documents in normal mode.

  4. Click OK to save the option changes.

If the document is currently in Reading Layout mode, click on the View menu and select Normal to view the document normally.
