Restore missing Recycling Bin

Summary

Access to the recycle bin has been removed from some installations of Windows 2000 Advanced Server. These installations are used in special purpose applications when it is strongly recommended that direct access to the operating system should be kept to a minimum. The Dell PowerVault 715N is one example of this design.

Step-by-step instructions

To restore access to the Recycle Bin, do the following:

  1. Open Registry Editor (Start>Run>regedit).
  2. Navigate to the following key:
    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
    \Desktop\NameSpace
    .
    NOTE: HKLM is the abbreviation for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
  3. Click Edit.
  4. Click New.
  5. Select Key.
  6. Type {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} and press ENTER.
  7. Click Edit.
  8. Click New.
  9. Click String value.
  10. Type @ and press ENTER.
  11. Double click the value @, type Recycle Bin and click OK.
  12. Close Registry Editor.
  13. Click in a vacant area of the desktop and press F5 to refresh the screen.
