Enable IP routing on Windows workstations

(Article ID: 000956)
Summary

IP routing would normally be handled through the use of a standalone router or the use of a server that has been set up to route IP traffic. If a standalone router or server with router capabilities is not available a workstation running Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP Professional can be used.

NOTE: These instructions may not work with a system running Windows XP Home Edition. Let me know if they do and I will update this article accordingly.

Step-by-step instructions

To enable IP routing on a Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional workstation, do the following:

  1. Open Registry Editor (Start>Run>regedit).
  2. Navigate to the following registry key:
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters.
NOTE: HKLM is the abbreviation for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
  3. Locate the DWORD value IPEnableRouter.
NOTE: If this value does not exist, do the following:
    1. Click Edit.
    2. Click New.
    3. Click DWORD value.
    4. Type IPEnableRouter and press ENTER.

  4. Double click on IPEnableRouter.
  5. Type 1 and press ENTER.
  6. Close Registry Editor.

A restart may be necessary for the changes to take effect.
