TiVo Time Update

(Article ID: 000920)

In order to (re)set the date and time on a TiVo because the internal system clock has drifted, do the following:
NOTE: This assumes the following:

  1. The TiVo has been modified so that it can be connected to a network and is accessible from a remote system.
  2. The TiVo has been set up so that it can access the Internet.
  3. The remote workstation is running a version of Microsoft Windows (95 or higher and can access the same network).

  1. Open a telnet session with the TiVo (Start>Run>telnet <TiVo DNS name or IP address>).
  2. Type /bin/ntpdate -s -b -p 8 -u nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn and press ENTER.

NOTE: nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn is the IP address of the time server you wish to use for synchronization. Also note that TiVo (series 1 anyway) does not have DNS name resolution capabilities so you will have to find out the IP address of your time server, not just the DNS name.

Some possible time servers are:
utcnist.colorado.edu=128.138.140.44
Columbia County, Georgia=68.216.79.113

Ammended 11 March, 2007 at 14:49

In order to compensate for the new DST rules effective 11 March, 2007, do the following:

  1. Open a telnet session with the TiVo (Start>Run>telnet <TiVo DNS name or IP address>).
  2. Type date --set='+1 hour' and press ENTER.

NOTE: The time will have to be corrected again on the day that "normal daylight savings time" would take effect. In that case, the command would be date --set='-1 hour'.
