Internet Explorer hangs with search bar enabled

(Article ID: 000897)
Summary

By default, Internet Explorer 6 uses Search Companion in its search function. This can cause Internet Explorer to hang and not allow any web requests to be made. In order to fix this problem, the search function needs to be changed from "Search Companion" to "Classic Internet Search". This can be accomplished by either changing the settings using the Internet Explorer interface or by changing the setting in the registry directly.

Step-by-step instructions

To change the settings using the Internet Explorer interface, do the following:

  1. Launch Internet Explorer (if it is not already open).
  2. Click Search (the magnifying glass).
  3. Click "Change Preferences".
  4. Click "Change Internet Search Behavior".
  5. Select the "With Classic Internet Search" radio button. You can optionally choose a default search engine at this stage.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Restart Internet Explorer.

To change the settings using the registry, do the following:

  1. Close ALL instances of Internet Explorer.
  2. Open Registry Editor (Start>Run>regedit).
  3. Navigate to the following key:
    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main.
NOTE: HKCU is the abbreviation for HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
  4. Look for a value called Use Search Asst.
NOTE: If this value does not exist, do the following:
    1. Click on Edit.
    2. Click on New.
    3. Select String Value.
    4. Type (without quotes) "Use Search Asst" and press ENTER.
      NOTE: Capitalization does count!

  5. Double click the Use Search Asst value.
  6. Type no and press ENTER.
    NOTE: Capitalization does count!
  7. Close Registry Editor.
  8. Start an instance of Internet Explorer and test the Internet connectivity.
