Disable Automatic Restart on BSOD

(Article ID: 000907)
Summary

Windows XP automatically restarts workstations when they encounter a "Blue Screen of Death (BSOD)" situation. This is meant to increase availability of the workstation. This behavior can be disabled so that the problem can be diagnosed by using the System Control Panel applet or by editing the setting in the registry directly.

Step-by-step instructions

To change the setting using the System Control Panel applet, do the following:

  1. Hold in the Windows key (it has the Windows symbol on it) and press the PAUSE/BREAK key.
NOTE: This applet can also be accessed from the Control Panel when set to Classic View.
  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. Click the Settings button in the "Startup and Recovery" section.
  4. Clear the checkbox next to "Automatically restart" in the "System failure" section.
  5. Click OK to close the Startup and Recovery page.
  6. Click OK to close the System Properties page.

To change the setting using the registry, do the following:

  1. Open Registry Editor (Start>Run>regedit).
  2. Navigate to the following key:
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl.
NOTE: HKLM is the abbreviation for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
  3. Locate the value AutoReboot.
NOTE: If this value does not exist, do the following:
    1. Click on Edit.
    2. Click on New.
    3. Select DWORD value.
    4. Type AutoReboot and press ENTER.
      NOTE: Capitalization does count!

  4. Double click the AutoReboot value.
  5. Type 0 (type 1 to enable Automatic Restart on BSOD) and press ENTER.
  6. Close Registry Editor.
